Off Shore Doesn't
Mean What it Used to!
There’s a new buzz phrase in corporate America, "off
shoring". Perhaps you’ve heard of it. Off shoring is when
companies send jobs over seas where the labor will be far cheaper.
I’m a big proponent of taking control of your life and not leaving
your fate in the hands of a company. Well here’s yet another reason to
think this way.

Off Shoring is Nothing New
It hit the manufacturing sector during the late 1980s when many
blue-collar workers, in cities like Flint Michigan lost their jobs. Back
then it was referred to as "outsourcing". These jobs went to
workers in areas like Mexico City, again because the labor was over 50%
cheaper.
I used to work in the automotive industry in Flint. The town was
devastated when thousands of workers at General Motors’ plants lost
their jobs, due to outsourcing. Did you ever see Michael Moore’s 1989
movie "Roger and Me"? It chronicles Flint.

Service Industries are
No Longer Immune
This time it’s the white collar worker’s turn. Professional and
technical workers are now losing their jobs to cheaper labor in places
like India and the Philippines. These are service jobs in a variety of
industries including, Insurance, Accounting, Information Systems,
Customer Service and Healthcare just to name a few.
For example, a major U.S. accounting firm has hundreds of accountants
processing U.S. tax returns at its Bangalore, India tax prep center.
This is a relatively new venture for this company, but they already have
plans to double the center’s size very quickly.
You would be surprised at how many of your insurance claims are
processed in offshore locations.
As one executive said, "Corporate America is quickly learning
that a cubicle can be replaced overseas as easily as a shop floor
can".

Think You're Safe Because
You're in Management?
Think again. It’s not just clerical workers being affected; it’s
also managers and specialty workers. It’s estimated that 17.4% of
unemployed Americans are administration and professional workers.
The problem is just going to get worst. Forrester Research predicts
that in the next 15 years 3.3 million service jobs will move to
countries like India, Russia, China and the Philippines.
The practice of off shoring will save companies billions of dollars
and continue to line the pockets of executives, but do you really think
we will see the savings passed along in the form of lower prices?
